The Association of European Election Officials annually celebrates the International Day of Democracy on the first Thursday of February with the support of the Global Conference on Election Management held in Székesfehérvár (Hungary) in September 2005.

The main goal of designating the International Day of Democracy is to draw public attention to the issue of ensuring citizens' electoral rights and enhancing electoral processes.
In connection with the date, Zayniddin Nizomxodjayev, Chairman of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan, sent congratulatory letters to the Election Department of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the Association of European Election Officials (AEEO), the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB), and other international organizations, as well as foreign election bodies.
Chairman Z. Nizomxodjayev congratulated on the 17th anniversary of the International Day of Democracy, emphasizing that elections are an integral part of a democratic state governed by the rule of law, and popular will is a fundamental form of public opinion and participation in state governance.
According to the congratulations, free and fair elections, a key factor in the democratization process, are recognized as an essential means of expressing public will in all regions of the world today.
