BEIJING DECLARATION

 

(Adopted for the Fourth Conference of the World Conference on Women, Beijing, 4-15 September 1995)

 

1. We, the Governments participating in the Fourth World Conference on Women,

 

2. Gathered here in Beijing in September 1995, the year of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations,

 

We are convinced that:

 

13. Women's empowerment and full participation on the basis of equality in all spheres of society, including participation in decision-making and access to power, are fundamental to achieving the goals of equality, development and peace;

 

14. Women's rights are human rights;

 

15. Equal rights, opportunities and access to resources, equal distribution of family responsibilities between men and women and harmonious partnership between them are key to their well-being and the well-being of their families, as well as to the strengthening of democracy;

 

We are determined:

 

23. Ensure that women and girls can fully enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms and take effective action against violations of these rights and freedoms;

 

24. Take all necessary measures to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and girls and remove all obstacles to the achievement of equality between men and women and the advancement and empowerment of women;

 

25. Seek the full participation of men in all efforts to achieve equality;
